Overview

From 1849 to 1923, half a million Indian indentured labourers passed through the Immigration Depot, to be transported to plantations throughout the British Empire.
This large-scale migration of the laborers left an indelible mark on our society, with Indians constituting a substantial proportion of our national populations. During this journey, we invite you indulge into the historical
sites and discover different ways that Indian immigration has influenced our culture, political faces, religion, cuisine, arts and music.
After the first stop at the “Ganga Talao” (Grand Bassin), the biggest Hindu temple of the island, built around a sacred lake, head to the temple called Kailasson in Port Louis, which is a must to understand the religious impact
on our culture. This will be followed by a visit of the Aapravasi Ghat, which is now part of the UNESCO World Heritage Center. Lunch will be served in an Indian restaurant where you will experience typical Indian food. A
guided tour in the Capital City will bring you to Indian merchants who still sell spices at the back of the market, as it was the case 2 centuries ago.
