  • Highlights of Umbria 8 days
This is a region where time has stood still for generations and where the land is dominated not by vast sprawling cities, but by quaint and often traffic-free, hill-top towns, separated by rolling countryside and vast vineyards and olive groves. Welcome to the stunning landscapes of the green heart of Italy. Umbria, uniquely possessing neither a coastline nor an international border, is characterised by its beautiful countryside and culinary delights, including fine wines, chocolates and black truffles. Jazz music is also highly popular among the locals and can be heard in many a café and bistro. Based just outside of the ancient town of Assisi, best known as the birthplace of St.Francis, we explore the idyllic countryside and ancient towns that the region is famous for, including Perugia, the regional capital, and Assisi itself. We sample many locally-sourced and crafted produce along the way, with wine tasting and a chance to make your own chocolate. This holiday is a real treat for those who appreciate Italian food, wine, culture and architecture.

Detailed Itinerary

On arrival, pick up your car rental and drive to your hotel. Check in and take some time to
relax or use the hotel’s facilities.
Evening: Free time for dinner and overnight.

Morning: just a short distance from the hotel the hilltop town of Assisi is best known as the
birthplace of St Francis. Your guided tour of this historic town will take in the preserved
medieval centre as well as the imposing Basilica of St. Francis; sanctified in 1253 and a
World Heritage Site. The Upper Basilica has a Gothic appearance and is famous for its
beautiful frescoes depicting scenes from the life of St. Francis painted in the late 1290s by
Giotto and his School. The Lower Basilica, is darker and more austere, containing yet
more masterpieces.
Afternoon: after time for lunch return to the hotel to relax and enjoy its facilities.
Evening: dinner in a local restaurant with a drink.

Morning: head to the medieval town of Todi. Your guided walking tour includes the
funicular and will take in the Piazza del Popolo, the heart of the city, where you will find
some of the most important buildings of the historic centre, including the People’s Palace
and the Captain’s Palace. Beneath the square are two Roman cisterns which date back to
the 2nd century. The narrow lanes house ancient craft shops, cafés and restaurants.
From Piazza Garibaldi enjoy the breath-taking view of the countryside below.
Afternoon: Umbria is famous for the quality of its black truffles. Today you can enjoy a
truffle-based lunch in a typical family-run farmhouse with panoramic views, before
returning to the hotel.
Evening: Free time for dinner and overnight.

Morning: Spoleto, a hill town situated at the foot of the Apennines, is dominated by the
medieval fortress which sits high above the town and which was used as a prison until the
1980s. Your guided tour will take you up a series of escalators to reach the town, and its
narrow streets. The 12th century Romanesque Cathedral is set against a backdrop of hills
and valleys and the Roman theatre. Enjoy the wide panoramic view from the front of the
Church of St Peter, encompassing the city as far as the mighty Bridge of Towers.
Afternoon: a wine tasting at a family-run winery and vineyard which dates back to 1896.
Take a guided tour of the cellars to see the wine-making process and bottling. There will
be a chance to taste some of these wines at a tasty light lunch with breath-taking views
across the vineyards. Return to the hotel in the late afternoon to relax or take a public bus
on the short journey to Assisi to explore at leisure.
Evening: Free time for dinner and overnight.

Morning: a guided tour of Orvieto, situated high above the valley floor. The 14th century
Roman Catholic cathedral is known for its dynamic Gothic façade of mosaics, stained
glass and sculptures and its optical illusion interior. Behind the cathedral, a complex of
medieval palaces called Palazzi Papali displays the city's best devotional art. A tour of
Orvieto’s underground world is also included.
Afternoon: after time for some lunch, return to the hotel to relax.
Evening: dinner with a drink in a local restaurant.

Morning: a walking tour of this hilltop village perched on a pinnacle, accessed via a
pedestrian bridge on an uphill slope. This traffic-free village has escaped the modern age,
mainly because of its topography. Ivy drapes over arches and scrambles up walls, pots of
flowers parade across balconies and the warm stone walls glow in the sunshine. Civita
became known as ‘the dying town’ due to the forces of nature that have threatened its
survival since the 17th century. Because of the effects of wind and erosion and
unregulated tourism, the village was placed on the World Monuments Fund’s Watch List.
Afternoon: return to the hotel to use the facilities or explore the local village of Santa Maria
degli Angeli.
Evening: Free time for dinner and overnight.

Morning: a guided tour of the Perugina Chocolate Factory which produces the famous Baci
chocolate, amongst others. Learn about the history of the Perugina company and see the
chocolates in production. (There are plenty of samples along the way!) Afterwards, at a
chocolate-making lesson, learn the techniques to create impressive masterpieces, created
by the passion and skill of the Chocolate Masters. You also get to take home the fruits of
your labour.
Afternoon: visit the capital city of the Umbria region, Perugia. Explore the historic centre,
taking in the medieval Palazzo dei Priori with its fine frescoes, which was once the town’s
administrative headquarters. The Cattedrale Metropolitana di San Lorenzo has a baroque
façade and Roman ruins below, and houses Renaissance paintings and frescoes. The
Fontana Maggiore, a marble fountain with carvings of Biblical scenes and signs of the
zodiac, is situated on the main square, the Piazza IV Novembre.
